The first half of April was difficult because of the ongoing spawn. We finally started to see some post-spawn fish come out to some of the "normal" offshore haunts. Obviously, many male bass have stayed close to their beds, to guard the fry, so a square-bill has been effective in the 4-10ft zone, near floating timber. The weather patterns have been tough to figure. We've ended the month with high winds. This makes it hard to control the boat amongst all the stumps. Almost got knocked into the water a few times.
The coming weeks should bring the return to offshore fishing for suspended bass. With Livescope, this has become much easier to do. Underspins, jerkbaits (+1 or +2) and A-rigs. The topwater bite should also be getting better. The heat is just around the corner, so time to stock-up on your Mag-worms and terminal tackle associated. If you haven't tried the straight shank hook with screw-lock weight, you should. Less hangups and more hookups.
Here's a late April fish caught on my favorite Cornerstone Baits square-bill.
