Seems like I repeat myself with these monthly reports. "Crazy weather" "Off and On conditions" etc... Well, this month is a bit different. The fishing has been a repeat, but what HAS changed is the lake.
Monday, February 5th is the day that changed everything. Ben Milliken caught a 13.15lb ShareLunker... and decided to share it. Not only with the State of Texas, but with his half-million YouTube followers. (It only got 63,000 views, so far) This was a good thing... but mostly a bad thing.
Good, because it promoted the lake and I might get a few more guide trips. Bad, because it promoted the lake and I may never have a place to bring my clients without 5 boats within 200 yards. Simply put: This tiny little 800 acres can't handle this pressure. Thanks, MF'er! <-- (Milliken Fishing)
I actually don't blame Ben. Congrats, 402! I know that he struggled to decide whether or not to turn that fish over. And, I'd be a hypocrite if I said I wouldn't do the same, if I ever caught a 13+ fish. Not mad, Ben. Just disappointed in the resulting traffic jam in the parking lot. You understand. (As if you'd actually be reading this.) 😆
I digress. The uber-warm last two weeks brought the water temps back to 58-59 deg. This seems to have pushed the fish out of the deep, towards the bedding grounds. Here goes another tough month of bed fishing, here on the Nac. Remember, this lake is different. Steeper banks and clearer than average water can have fish spawning in deeper depths. Try presenting your offering in 6-8ft before rushing up to the bank to spot beds.
Despite being about HALF the weight of the Milliken fish, this was the best I could muster in Feb. That's why I guide, and he's an "Elite".
