What a tough first month of 2022! The weather has had everything from bitter freezes to wicked winds to spring-time heat and thunder storms. Hard to get out and stay on the fish patterns when Mother Nature makes it so tough. We did have a few sessions with good catches. But, so far, this January can't compare with previous Jan's catches. When we have found fish, the usual suspects come into play: Alabama-rigs - Suspending Jerk-baits - 1/4 oz Underspins - The occasional TX-rig or Jig.
I keep getting asked one question... "Why has the past year been so bad for fishing?" I don't have an exact answer. However, in my opinion, the "Snow-mageddon" event of Feb 21 has sent a residual effect throughout the food chain. The significant loss of vegetation led to a drop in micro-organisms, which led to a drop in bait fish health and population, which affected the predator bass population. (Circle of life kinda thing) Unfortunately, I haven't seen a sharp increase in the overall bait population as of yet. Meaning, that I don't see the massive schools of bait balls swimming through the creeks for the ambush predators to feed upon. Sad.
Let's hope for an early February return to "normal" with the pre-spawn bass getting fattened up in preparation for the annual spring "fling". At some point, these fish simply have to eat! It's finding where their favorite restaurant sits... that's the trick! And, you guessed it... you can't catch'em of you don't throw'em. So, get out here and go fishing!
BTW: The Lake Naconiche Retreat cabins have re-opened in nice fashion. New ownership has brought a breath of fresh air to the place. They have done some great upgrades to the cabins and the property. You should make the trip to see for yourself!
